Hubpages Income Report: June 2010

Okay folks, it’s been a while since I’ve posted my last Hubpages Income Report, but here it is. For a while, I wasn’t writing any new content for Hubpages. I have noticed that the more content you write there and the more involved you are on the site (leaving comments, rating other hubs, going to the forums), the more traffic you will tend to get to your Hubs.

Another thing I have noticed is that over time Hubpages articles tend to generate more traffic. There’s always the argument between fresh and evergreen content, but I have to say that a good content strategy involves both. I guess what I’m getting at is with Hubpages, think LONG TERM.

Not that you can’t make money right away on hubpages with relevant and timely articles, but over time you have the potential to generate some very good revenue from what you publish on the site.

My Hubpages income was the best it has ever been last month (you should notice a steady growth over the months). I earned $174 from display advertising and another $43 in eBay affiliate commissions (which is paid out as pay per click). Amazon income was pretty negligible–I’m still trying to figure out how to effectively use Amazon links. I don’t use Kontera for the majority of my hubs–only on a few low-paying ones.

The total earnings were $217. This is pretty much based on Hubs I have published over the past couple of years, as I didn’t do too much work on the site last month.

With Hubpages, you can create a pretty decent residual income stream. Be consistent by writing about similar topics (although it will never hurt you to branch off into a totally random and non-competitive ancillary interest of yours), build links between your Hubs, and think about where you want to place your display advertising and ebay links.

Make More Money on Hubpages: 5 Tips

Hubpages is a website where you can write “Hubs” about pretty much any subject you want to.

If you haven’t signed up yet, do it now at Hubpages.com

You can also make money on Hubpages through display ads and affiliate links from online merchants eBay and Amazon.com.

But, if you’re reading this post, you most likely already know all about Hubpages and have already taken a stab at writing at the site and you may already be making money.

Chances are that you might be interested in learning how to make more money from your existing Hubs.

Well, it’s your lucky day, because this post is a list of 5 ways to make more money with Hubpages that I’ve learned in my time writing Hubs.

If you know nothing about Hubpages, read this post first.

5 ways to make more money on Hubpages

Use eBay and Amazon.com Affiliate Links. Okay, this may seem like an obvious one, but it is important to point out that you cannot make a lot of money on Hubpages (or any website for that matter) if you don’t place a fair amount of advertisements on your hubs. Don’t be afraid to use eBay and Amazon links on the same Hub. The more potential revenue streams you open up, the more potential revenue you will be able to make. Give people the option to click on your ads and affiliate links.

Action: Add either an Amazon or eBay affiliate box to one of your Hubs.

Write with a Product in Mind. There are quite a few writers on Hubpages who write like Internet marketing copywriters. Basically, they write to make sales, which is a good thing. Some of these writers even go so far as to write a point blank title, which is a really smart thing to do. This type of title might look something like this: “Buy SEO Copywriting Books Online.” See how clear and to the point that is? Visitors to this page are going to be predisposed to buying Copywriting books online. It’s a highly targeted way of writing. ”Highly targeted” is good because “highly targeted” converts.

If these writers do their job right, they are providing a valuable service to a visitor who is actively looking for a recommendation or a good deal on a certain product. If you write with a product or products in mind, you will be able to get targeted visitors to your site. You need to remember, however, that sincerity and and putting in the effort to help a visitor, are key to this kind of hub. The hard sell will never work.

Action: Find one of your hubs that has an unclear or less targeted title and make it more direct and stronger. Write it with search queries in mind. In other words, think about what someone would type into a search engine to find your Hub.

Write Longer Posts. Longer hubs (ie, more words on the page) will do better for you in the long run. I would suggest making your Hubs at least 500 words. Longer hubs will attract more traffic for different keyword combinations that will occur naturally in your long piece of writing. Traffic is always good and is really the only way you will make money with Hubpages. Plus, longer hubs tend to get higher Hubscores and probably more internal traffic from hubpages itself. Your visitors may also spend more time on your page, which means they will more likely notice an ad or affiliate link.

Action: Add 100 words to one of your Hubs and see if it helps you get more traffic.

Provide Unique Information. If you just rehash a given topic in your Hub, you will not make money on Hubpages. It’s just not going to happen. Your work will never be found in search engines because a lot has probably been written about your chosen topic already.

If you take the time to provide unique information and concentrate on providing value for your visitors, your hubs will do better. You will get more comments which should help your search engine rankings. More engagement and interaction from your audience is good for you.

Action: Add your opinion or a first-hand story about whatever topic you write about. This will by default be unique and may help add a stronger POV to your Hub.

Do Keyword Research. If you write content on the web, you know how frustrating it can be to spend hours on a piece and have no one read it. If you don’t use keyword phrases to let search engines and potential readers know just what your hub is about, you run the risk of internet traffic oblivion. Basically, you want a good title with your keywords near the front of it.

A clear, descriptive title is one of the most important SEO aspects to think about. Use Google’s Keyword Tool to find out which terms are the most searched and which ones are less competitive.

Action: Think about the terms a web browser would type into Yahoo or Bing to find your Hub. Use these keyword phrases, as well as a few that are related, and add them to your Hub in a natural way.

Hubpages Income Report November 2009

Okay, I know this is a little bit late, but I want to continue to put up my Hubpages income reports every month since I’ve written quite a few posts about how great I think the site is and how helpful it can be in your overall online business and income strategy.

In November, I earned $104.21 in Adsense income and another $17 in eBay income. Although not a huge amount of money, the eBay income was a nice surprise. I am benefiting from the changes eBay has made to its associates program.

The longer I continue to write “hubs” at Hubpages, the better I get at writing them for search traffic and for maximum exposure. For example, one key thing I’ve started doing is linking between similarly-themed hubs. At the end of one hub, I’ll link to five or six other articles that I think may interest the reader.

This is a great way to keep traffic moving between your hubs and to gain more page views. And more page views means more clicks.

The other thing I’ve learned is that quality counts. If you write higher quality hubs, you’ll get more traffic, more comments, and higher scores, all things that help create sustainable pageviews to your work. But that doesn’t mean you can ignore strong, keyword rich titles. A little keyword research will take you a long way.

I now see that Hubpages can be a very good place to make money online–it’s not only useful for back links, which is what a lot of people expect from the site. Hubpages is a great website to integrate into your overall Internet content strategy, whatever it may be. I think every blogger, business owner, or anyone who wants an internet presence at all will benefit from joining and writing at Hubpages. Besides, once you get the hang of it, the site has a really easy publishing system and there’s an engaged community that likes to help each other out.

Hubpages is a website I’ve written quite a bit about lately. It is a site where you can publish your own writing and earn money from advertisements and affiliate links displayed on your pages.

Today, I found out that Hubpages’ CEO, Paul Edmonson, actually writes quite a few “Hubs.” He wrote a very good article titled Three Ways to Make Money Online, which is really informative for anyone who wants to know how to make money online.

Hubpages Adsense Earnings for August

Since I’ve written several posts about how to make money with Hubpages, I figured I would give you a look at my Hubpages earnings just to let you know that it really is possible to make money writing good content at the site.

First of all, Hubpages is a site where you can sign up for an account, write content, and earn money from Adsense ads that are displayed when you publish your work. You get to keep 60 percent of the revenue while Hubpages, quite fairly, gets to keep 40 percent. The exposure and traffic you will get just by publishing on the site is well-worth the site’s cut of profits.

My Hubpages Earnings for August were $76.30.

I have about 30 Hubs that get most of my traffic and, admittedly, some of them are based on low paying keywords. I know these earnings could have been higher if I had a stronger focus on higher cost per click terms. But some of the lower paying niche I write about are fun and I like them, so I’m not going to stop. There are some simple ways to earn more money with your Hubs, which I write about in a few of my articles here.

These earnings required no outside promotion or any link-building other than linking from similar Hubs, which is something you want to do when you can. See the above link for more details about back-links.

What I want you to take out of this earnings statement is that you can earn money on Hubpages too. The great part is I have already written these hubs and, in terms of search, they will only do better. Older content earns more traffic over time. These hubs are like pieces of online real estate that will earn money every single month.

So, as I add more hubs, my income will only increase. And if I pay attention to higher earning keywords and niches, I will earn more money as well. One lesson I’ve learned is that it can be a little disheartening when you see how low some hubs pay because it’s all related to products and advertisers in your given niche. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to stop writing about these subjects because, frankly, it’s not all about money–at least, not all the time.

The second thing I want you to get out of this Hubpages income report is that your hubs will be indexed more quickly by Google and other search engines, you will gain higher pagerank faster, and will earn more traffic in a shorter amount of time than you would starting a brand new blog.

I’m not trying to discourage you from starting your own money-making blog, I just want to relate that you can harness the power and authority of a well-respected site to make money online while also promoting yourself and your own website. How to Make Money Online with Hubpages

Hubpages is a website where you can write about whatever you want and earn money for your efforts. This is the one line explanation of the site, but there is quite a bit more to it.

You earn money when you gain traffic to your site and that traffic clicks on advertisements that display on the page. For this reason, traffic is one of the most important elements that will help you make money online with Hubpages. Making money online is really no easy feat, but there are quite a few ways to do it.

You can obviously provide a service or sell a product. You can also do online copywriting or freelance writing. I have been watching the site for a while, and I think that if you can learn how to use Hubpages to make money, ie, you learn how to create “hubs” that gain traffic, convert traffic to ad clicks or affiliate sales, and rise to the top of the search engine rankings, then you will know a great deal about internet marketing. And this experience will help you out a lot in whatever kind of business you get into online.

In the online environment, it’s all about words. Words are where search engines can really dig in and find relevant information for web surfers. Because of this, online marketing or making money online is often dependant on writing.

People write a lot about writing for humans versus writing for search engines. I think it’s important to do both, meaning that you do have a focus on certain keywords, but you don’t want to write in such a way that the content is unreadable for a human being. You always want to write for people first, and for search engine bots second. There is a lot of value in enticing people not only to read your content, but to come back and read it again.

However, that being said, there is also a lot of value in enticing viewers to your work in order to encourage a click through on Adsense. There is nothing wrong with doing this, but if you write really hacky articles that are filled only with keywords and nothing else your work will be weeded out by Google and send to search oblivion. If people can’t find your work, then you won’t make any money.

Hubpages is a good place to write because you immediately get a boost in rank when you publish a piece because the site is well respected by Google as a network that produces informative and helpful user-generated content. Hubpages does a good job of policing itself in terms of eliminating crap content and making sure their advertising networks run smoothly and there’s no fraudulent activity going on. As a result, your content will be indexed by search engines a lot quickly than if you started your own blog and wrote something. It could take you months to get a few readers to an article on your own site, whereas it may take hours or a day or two to get readers to your hub.

How to Make Money with Hubpages.

The way you earn money on hubpages is through the Google Adsense program and affiliate links through eBay and Amazon. You can also earn with an advertising network called Kontera, but don’t worry about it for now because it really doesn’t pay that well. If you are a savvy internet marketer, you can also make money on Hubpages with your own affiliate links to third party websites.

You split revenue with Hubpages 60/40 in your favor. The way this works is 6 times out of 10 your ID is used in the advertisements, which means you will earn on a click or sale made during this time. The other 4 times Hubpages has the potential to earn money for an action taken. People sometimes think that the total revenue is just split 60/40, but that’s not the case. Your ID is used randomly 6 times out of 10. It is a generous pay structure and there are quite a few people making good money at Hubpages.

Hubpages is a great place to start writing online, and even making money online. I mentioned earlier that you want to use keywords in your articles in order to be competitive and gain traffic to your work—because that’s what you need to do if you want to make any money. The way you do this is imagine what someone would type into a search engine in order to find the information you are providing.

If you were going to write about “making money online by writing,” then that phrase could be the keyword phrase you would want to use in your article. The next thing you want to consider is how competitive a term is. You can do this by using the Google Keyword Tool at this URL – https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

This tool will show you how many times your keyword has been searched in the past month and will give you a monthly average. It will also give you ideas of related terms that may be better options for you to use because they’re less competitive. It may sound a little confusing at the beginning, but you will get the hang of it after you do keyword research a few times. You also want to look at the price paid per click, which will give you a good idea on how much money ads that will display will be worth. The figure shown is not the total that you will earn because Google keeps some of the money, but you can easily see which terms are “worth” more and which ones are worth less.

My next article will go into more depth about choosing keywords for your internet writing. But for now, write down or copy and paste two or three sets of terms and how often they are searched and what they are worth. Now, you can type the keyword phrase into Google to see how many pages pop up. This is not an exact science but it will give an idea of how much content on the internet uses the term you are searching. If 100,000,000 pages come up, there are a lot of pages about what you are planning to write about, so it may be a lot more difficult to compete and get to the top of the search engines with your page. However, if only 250,000 pages come up, you have found a niche in which you can compete and may possibly be able to “own” by getting your page to the top. This is how you make good money in internet marketing with content and Google Adsense.

If you have a specialized skillset (and we all have at least one) I highly recommend you start creating content based on it on the internet. I notice that I sometimes get a few visitors to this site who are looking for ways to make money while unemployed. Hubpages is one such way. Start writing content about your expertise. I don’t care if it’s plumbing, roofing, gardening, or investing. If you can create content that is useful to people and valuable in some way, you will be able to make money.
