Three Reasons Your Niche Site Makes No Money and You Should Get Rid of It

February 20th, 2013

internet-marketingThis is meant to be a really short post with three short reasons your niche website is making no money.  I’ve built a few sites based around tightly defined niches — some successful, some not.  By comparing my successes with my failures, I think I am in a good position to offer up some lessons I have learned in the niche marketing game.

Three Reasons You’re Niche Site Makes No Money

1) You don’t care about the products associated with the niche or people interested in the niche.  In comparing two successful sites I’ve created and that generate income against two unsuccessful sites that don’t generate income, it’s clear to me that you need to at least sort of like the niche you are building the website around.  If you like the niche, you will spend more time working on the site.  Try to find a niche that you don’t despise.

2) Sales in your niche don’t pay well.  If you’re working your tail off to sell a product that generates a $10 commission for you, then you need to sell a lot of this product to make any money.  Sure, it will probably be difficult in the beginning to sell products that generate higher commissions, but in the long run, it may be a better idea to promote higher cost products.  Why work your butt off for small commissions?  Selling anything is difficult.  Seeing one big commission will encourage you to work even harder.

3) You don’t genuinely recommend the products you are, um, recommending.  This is probably the biggest hurdle to having a successful niche website.  If you are only thinking about the money at the end of the road, you probably won’t get too far.  I don’t mean that it is bad to be thinking about profit at every step of the process of creating a niche site — I mean, why else would we make niche sites? — I just mean that it will be a whole lot easier to make money in a niche with products you can genuinely recommend.  Make things easier on yourself.

Get More Hubpages Traffic using Article Directories

July 14th, 2010

If you’re looking for a sure-fire traffic generation tip for your Hubpages articles, one way to go is with article directories like ezinearticles.com or articlesbase.com.

If you haven’t already, sign up at Hubpages.com

These sites are well-respected by Google and other search engines because they are moderated by human beings (which means that all articles must adhere to the quality standards of the site), they have been around for a long time, and they churn out hundreds of pages of new content every single day consistently.

You can utilize the power of these large article directory websites to get more traffic to your Hubs on Hubpages.  And if you’re trying to make money on Hubpages or any other site for that matter, then you know that traffic is the name of the game.  The more traffic you get to your Hubpages, the more money you will make.

Traffic is the name of the game, but targeted traffic is golden.  Targeted traffic means that you have a hub about a topic like “free ebooks for the Amazon kindle” and you get a visitor who owns a kindle and is currently looking for ebooks to read without paying for them.  That’s targeted traffic and you can see why it’s a beautiful situation when things work out like that.

The visitor has a problem (or question) and you have a solution (or answer).  It’s a perfect match.

Article directories will help you gain targeted traffic to your hubs because you get to include two links in the footer at the end of the published article.  When people finish reading the article, they may click one of the links, which makes it pretty clear that they are interested in what you have to offer in you Hub.  In addition Article Directories give you extra backlinks, which will help your rankings in the search engine results pages over time.

Try article directories.  They work for any kind of content promotion.  They work long term too, which is a great thing to know.  Over time, these articles will gain more authority, traffic, and higher rankings (or at least they should–and this is why you should always focus on quality articles) and will over time create more opportunities for your business.

How to Actually Make Money on Hubpages

January 5th, 2010

hubpages-logoThe simple answer as to how to make money on Hubpages is to actually have something to say. Some value to add. Some information to provide. It’s important to understand how to use keywords, but don’t take it too far.

Don’t become obsessed with SEO linking schemes and don’t stuff keywords where they don’t belong. In short, don’t overdo it. Provide good information and do it consistently.

Yes, I said consistently. The people who publish hubs on Hubpages consistently are the people who make the most money.

If you consistently write about a certain subject (which you certainly don’t need to do) it will help you establish a niche. More importantly, you will be able to more effectively link between your hubs. Write 10 or so hubs on the same topic and interlink them all. It’s always helpful to provide links to more pertinent and useful information.

If you write about honeybees (wow–that’s random), write another hub all about the nutritional value of honey and another about the American honey industry and another about how bees actually make honey and another about how honey farmers (are they called farmers?) operate the honey collection process.

Don’t know if there are any honey-hounds out there, but hey, it’s just an example.  You get the point.  This kind of coverage will help bounce traffic around between your hubs, will establish some authority, and will build trust from readers and even will help you earn links from other websites.

Notice how I wrote “earn” links.  It’s important to understand that a natural organic link from someone who genuinely finds value in your work and thus wants to share it with his or her readers is priceless.  It’s the name of the game.  It’s how you succeed with content online.  And, yes, it’s how you make money too.  One natural link is worth 100 forced links.

Making money on hubpages also requires that you do a little bit of promotion.  Well, you’re not required to do anything, but it will really help you gain exposure for your hubs if you build a few links to them.

One of the best ways to get more traffic to your hubs other than understanding how to write for a specific audience and doing a little bit of keyword research, is to create links from article directories.  Ezine Articles is the most well-known and consistently is at the top of Google search results pages for thousands of different niches.

You are allowed to include two footer links at the end of your articles, which you can point to your work at Hubpages.  Use keyword-rich anchor text to promote your hubs.  Using the honey example, you could write a basic article about the health benefits and the downsides of honey.  Make it 400 words long and make it worthwhile–the Ezine Articles staff has to approve it, so you have to meet their certain standards which can be a little difficult in the beginning.  Build at least one link to each of your Hubpage hubs.

Write another hub titled something like “My Honey Hubs” or “All You Ever Wanted to Know about Honey” and include links to all of your Honey hubs.  This link post will help people see all of your content organized and is another way to build links.

Another way to promote your hubs is by building a Blogger blog or WordPress blog (for free) and linking to each of your published hubs with a short description of what it’s about.  This may help widen your search footprint and drive more traffic to your hubs.

See how each link-building exercise is also providing value at the same time?  This is what will work for you over time.  If you’re not selfish and consistently think about your audience and providing great information, you will succeed in making money online–with any website.

So go get started making money on Hubpages.  If you sign up through this link, let me know because I have a little bonus to give to everyone who signs up through my site!
